SDL, the Maidenhead- based innovator in language translation technology, services and content management, led the way among the Thames Valley’s larger quoted companies when it came to share price rises in January.
Shares rose 10% after an update on trading performance for the past year which said continuing operations revenue and profit were expected to be slightly ahead of market expectations.
“Good progress continues to be made in executing the new strategic plan. All businesses have performed well, with strengthened recurring and repeat revenues evidenced. The 2016 outcome represents a sound underlying performance,” said the group.
As usual, the largest rises
were in the smallest quoted category with market capital of less than £50 miilion. Starvest, the Woking investment group that supports early-stage mineral exploration ventures, saw its shares soar 25% in a month when it issued 3.3 million new shares to directors, the majority in settlement of a loan. The group said the issue limited the outflow of cash from the business, thereby preserving cash for investment opportunities.
Vislink Group, the Hungerford-based global technology business specialising in the collection and delivery of high-quality video and associated data, also had a good month with shares rising 16%.

2016 HWYE competition finalists
Keep the excitement with the HWYE competition
Haines Watts has launched its Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition for 2017 with the aim of encouraging young entrepreneurs to keep their passion, drive and excitement for their business firmly in mind
The HWYE competition aims to support young entrepreneurs in their endeavours in several ways. We offer incentives to be the best (prizes and publicity) and provide a social network online where like-minded entrepreneurs can share experiences. We also publish blogs with useful tips on business-related issues.
The competition is open to young entrepreneurs who are under 36 years of age on July 31, 2017, from around the Thames Valley area (including Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire and Surrey).
Jane Gregory, a Haines Watts’ judge, said: “The process of entering the HWYE competition is valuable because, when you answer the online questions on the entry form, it makes you stop and evaluate all aspects of your business. So whether you win or not, it’s worthwhile to
put yourself out there – and if you did win, well that really would be something different to share wouldn’t it?”
Each winning local business chosen to attend this year’s finals on November 16, 2017 will receive a cash prize, a year-long mentoring programme with a partner from Haines Watts and free publicity.
Entry is free – just go online at
hwye.co.uk and provide some details about your company and why it should win. Applicants must have been in business for over a year but there is no lower age limit.
So, be exciting and try something different – the HWYE competition team would love to hear from you.
