that the captain was terrified because he couldn’t swim. Just then a wing gave way and was ripped off the plane and Jack was cast into the night. His chute was not on tightly and when it opened abruptly it jerked him up so violently it wounded him badly! The captain and tail gunner
were killed and the rest of the crew were taken prisoner by the Germans! Jack hit the water and managed to shuck off his chute and the rest of his clothes (he was not wearing his life jacket). When he was ejected from the plane he got a good look at the night sky and because of his navigational skills (he was the plane’s navigator) he deduced which way land lay and began swimming in that direction. He swam for five hours
