MUSIC REVIEW

Redemption & Ruin -

The Devil Makes Three (New West Records)

BILL MACPHERSON

Glancing at some of the publicity photos of the trio for this album, you’d be forgiven for thinking there’s some good metal about to be heard. Tattooed and solemn in the artful “tintype” promo portraits, their music is instead an appealing mix of bluegrass, old time country, folk and roots. And really, who cares what they look like? It’s all about the music. Out of Santa Cruz by way of Vermont, The Devil Makes

Three’s new album is not so much conceptual as a carefully chosen selection of thematic songs divided into the two sides of the title. The 12 songs here were apparently culled from about 80 initially considered for Redemption & Ruin, their sixth full- length album.

The artists covered here run the gamut, from the country/

bluegrass vibe of the Monroe Brothers, Ralph Stanley and Hank Williams Senior, dipping into the blues via Robert Johnson, Tampa Red and Muddy Waters, to modern troubadours Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits and Willie Nelson. The interpretations are their own southern gothic blend of Americana. Stylistically, the Haunted Windchimes, Crooked Still, Nickel Creek and, less so, Trailer Bride come to mind. An em- phasis on banjo, fiddle, standup bass, steel, pedal and acoustic guitar runs through all of them. The above bands might be a little lighter though, especially compared to the songs on the Ruin side.

Predictably awash with booze and drugs, an up-tempo, banjo-driven Drunken Hearted Man kicks it off, followed by Muddy Waters’ Champagne and Reefer and Willie Nelson’s classic I Gotta Get Drunk. Tampa Red’s I’m Gonna Get High is given a jazzy feel thanks to some slick clarinet by Denis
