Plans unveiled for secondary school
PLANS for a secondary school for Maidstone, providing 1,200 places, were shown at a public meeting at Valley Park School. The free school, which would be
run by Valley Invicta Academies Trust (VIAT), is intended to be a cen- tre of excellence for science and tech- nology. It would be built on its land near Vinters Park, with a proposed access road off New Cut Road. The trust, which runs secondary schools Valley Park and Invicta Grammar, as well as four primary schools in the area, first considered plans for the Maidstone School of Science and Technology three years ago. Approval was granted by the Department of Education (DoE) for a free school to open in September. The proposed intakewas 120, but
the datewas put back a year and the DoE asked for the number of pupils to be increased. The school, which will cater for 11
to 18-year-olds, will now open in September 2018, with an intake of 180 pupils. A trust spokesman said: “The school will help to meet the Kent
County Council predicted shortfall of secondary school places in the area from 2018 onwards. Current plans are that it will be built on the VIAT campus, which houses Valley Park School and Invicta Grammar School. The curriculum will focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM subjects).” The school’s industry partners will include Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, and its proposed international educational partner is the School of Science and Technol- ogy in Singapore. Kent County Council’s education commissioning plan forecasts a sur- plus of year 7 places in Maidstone until September 2018, when there will be a significant deficit. It says:
“We anticipate that the proposed 180 year 7 places at the free school will meet the majority of the forecast de- mand for non-selective places in Maidstone town from 2018-19. However, any further delay in open- ing of the school would lead to a sig- nificant shortfall in places and little time in which to respond.” The trust outlined the proposals at
a public consultation at the Hunts- man Lane campus, attended by rep- resentatives of BAM Construction and KSS Architects. Some initial concerns were raised
by residents about the potential im- pact on traffic and nearby housing. A planning application was ex-
pected to be submitted to Maidstone Borough Council.
