Multimodal 2017 Welcome to Multimodal 2017 Dear colleague

Welcome to Multimodal 2017, which promises to be bigger and better than ever. Multimodal is without doubt the best place to get to grips with the challeng- es and opportunities facing freight transport, by air, sea, road and rail.

Since last year’s show, there have been a number of major developments, the ripple effects of which are still being felt and understood by the industry. The EU referendum vote on the 23rd June could have sig- nificant implications for the supply chain, depending on the outcome of negotiations for new trade and customs arrangements between the UK and the EU. The FTA and its members are not standing by waiting for a result. Instead we are engaging closely with our members and all branches of government to ensure the voice of logistics is heard loud and clear. We have a series of monthly webinars, member meetings, and opportunities to engage with officials, with all details available on our website www.fta.co.uk

One of the most high profile issues in logistics since last year’s show is the long-awaited announcement of government support for a third runway at Heathrow, which FTA has campaigned hard for. The government is currently in the middle of a public consultation, which closes at the end of May, which means the Multimodal show is a perfect chance for leaders in logistics to discuss and debate the opportunities pre- sented by this chance to increase capacity. FTA are hosting two air cargo workshops at the show, discuss- ing Heathrow and wider issues in air freight.

Another significant change since last year has been

the implementation of worldwide Verified Gross Mass requirements for international container transport. Our session on this topic was standing room only at last year’s Multimodal show, as stakeholders were getting to grips with the new rules which came into force on 1 July 2016. For the most part implementa- tion has gone smoothly, with few examples of disrup- tion and delays at container ports. This year, addition- al issues on container transport will be in focus in the FTA seminars, including the Statement of Weight re- quirements in the EU (different from the VGM issues).

FTA is delighted to continue to support Multimodal. Please do join us on our stand (4110) for our drinks re- ception on the evening of 5 April, to speak to our staff and see how we can support your business. I hope you have a stimulating and rewarding show.

Dear colleague

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Trans- port (CILT) is the key membership organisation for influence, networking, training and career development for all logistics and transport pro- fessionals.

As a professional body, we are privileged to be recognised as a key source of impartial advice on the criticality of logistics and transport to the fu- ture of the UK economy. Moreover, we take great pride in serving our membership, both individual and corporate, with professional development and networking opportunities to advance their careers and business success. At CILT, we strive to deliver our part in your plan. Once again, we are delighted to be actively en- gaged at Multimodal. Many of the sectors we represent are brought together under one roof in this showcase to the world. Those involved in the movement of goods and services and as- sociated supply chains have been seizing oppor- tunities, adding value and creating solutions for centuries, underpinning great military victories and commercial ventures across the world and throughout time. That said, the pace of change is increasing; therefore, our innovation, diversity of thought, inclusivity and readiness to challenge the norms must also increase to keep British businesses ahead.

Multimodal and CILT’s Annual Conference is vi- tal if we are to seize the opportunities that Brexit presents. At this 10th Multimodal, expert mem- bers of CILT Forums will be leading Seminars on: Modal Switch Solutions and Benefits; Brex- it – exploring exporting and Free Trade Zones; the Logistics Outsourcing Lifecycle, and Raising Professional Driving Standards. I very much look forward to meeting you at the NEC on the CILT stand and at our Seminar Day.

I wish you every success in the year ahead, with CILT at your side.
