WHITE PARTY PALM SPRINGS 2017 JEFFREY SANKER’S

HOT TIME IN THE DESERT

by joel martens It’s inevitable, like leaves budding on trees,

some other friends of ours. Paul said, “I’m about to do some sort of animal project for Kolkata, West Bengal.” Well, everybody knows I love India…So I thought, “Hmm, I really want to do this.” I didn’t say anything. A few months later, I called, asking him if he was still doing this as I would love to do it with him. He was. That’s how it started and the model that we aspire

to is Animal Aid Unlimited in Udaipur, as what they are doing for animals there is incredible. So, it’s a beginning, really, of a new chapter in my life and I’m so fuckin’ excited (laughter). (For more information, please go to madebysurvivors.com/ animalpeople/ and facebook.com/animalpeoplealliance.) So, White Party Palm Springs. Have you ever been before and what are you most excited about? I don’t think I have ever been, but I love the desert

and love the energy of these kind of events. I’m so excited to perform my set, of course! Please tell us a little about what else you’re up to these days. I’m super-busy. I have a new album coming out

in October, I’ve been touring all over the world and just got back from Japan. I’m moving to Thailand very soon and I have festivals in Europe this summer and a Go Go’s 30th anniversary tour in October, as well...And that’s just off the top of my head. It’s all good!

the constant action of waves on the beach, the stars in the heavens and the sunshine in Southern California. They are all markers of time passing and the seasons changing over the course of another year. Another kind of unique marker, one that illustrates a different kind of passage and the beginning of another kind of “season...” One that for many, is as important a rite of passage as any in nature? It’s a place to see, know and understand another piece of who we are and how we fit into the larger community…And as a favorite friend once said, “A place to dance your tits off.” Jeffrey Sanker’s White Party. Started in

1990 as a gathering for 300 close friends in celebration of the rites of spring and for sure, the event has evolved mightily. They must be doing something right, because 27 years later, it now entertains upwards of 30,000 people from around the globe and delineates the start of SoCal’s gay summer season. Long Beach Pride, L.A. Pride, San Diego Pride and many others march steadily along following the signature event, giving the LGBT community favorite places to come together, celebrate and for a change, be in the majority. Admittedly, it’s a need that may not

be as great as it once was, we have affec- tively achieved some of the goal of integrating ourselves into the larger society. But, it remains still, an incredibly powerful thing to walk onto a dance floor surrounded by thousands of other gay men. It’s a connection that remains as affirming now, as it has always been…No matter what your age. So, head out to the desert, converge with your friends and community for White Party 2017 in Palm Springs from Friday, May 5 through Monday, May 8 and enjoy another kind of heat wave. Connect, dance, play, run amok and most of all, have a blast. Life is short my friends and it’s meant to be lived out loud and out proud...
