Y.E.S. San Diego Conference 2017 Y.E.S. stands for Youth Empowerment Synergy

and is a program of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation, whose mission is as follows: “We envi- sion a San Diego County where all youth are treated with respect and dignity by their peers. When this is not occurring, they are linked to support services to dissuade self-harming and high risk behaviors, prompted by feelings of rejection and isolation.” The Y.E.S. Conference 2017, takes place at San Diego State University, 5500 Campanile Drive on Saturday, April 8and was born out of support from two organizations committed to serving San Diego’s youth community—The UC San Diego AIDS Research Institute and Mental Health America of San Diego—due to the disproportionate impact of HIV infection and undiagnosed/untreated mental health challenges on young LGBTQ people. The event offers a chance to meet with and learn from LGBTQ entertainers, artists, community leaders and youth peers from around San Diego County. The goal is creating a safe space for LGBTQ youth and all who support them and will feature speakers, youth and young adult breakout sessions on topics such as coming out, suicide, HIV, gender identity, activism and much more. For tickets and more information, go to yessandiego.org.

Transgender Day of Empowerment 2017 The Transgender Day of Empowerment is held to empower, honor and celebrate the rich diversity of San Diego’s transgender community, to raise visibility and awareness about the issues that they face and to commemorate those who have been lost to trans-phobic violence. This annual event, established by long-time San Diego community member Tracie Jada O’Brien, takes place at the San Diego LGBT Center to offer a special moment of connection and support for those who are regularly discriminated against, personally, professionally and by the legal system, which historically offers little precedence for protection. This year’s program, held onFriday, April 14, is youth-focused and will include: speakers, entertainment, refreshments, awards and the announcement of the Third Annual Transgender Student Scholarship in honor of aforementioned founder and activist, Tracie Jada O’Brien. This event is free and open to all. For more information contact Connor Maddocks at cmaddocks@thecentersd.org or 619.692.2077 x109 at The Center or go to sdpride.org/tdoe.
