As the Irish economy grows stronger, so the demand for in-night
and early morning
delivery will increase, says BDA Logistics Innovation managing director Kevin Turner. BDA operates nightly flights
into Dublin from central Europe via Birmingham, using its own freighter aircraft, with goods then being transported through the night by road throughout Northern and Southern Ireland. Turner says that currently, and early morning services

are relatively rare, with few companies offering pre- 8am and pre noon options, particularly outside the pharmaceutical sector. “The
Irish market and
economy are strengthening,” he says, “and with that will come greater demand for in-night
deliveries. At

there aren’t many companies offering this service, but this is one area where there is huge potential. “Maintenance of materials
handling equipment is an area where demand for bespoke express deliveries looks set to grow. Companies who can tailor a service to the client’s exact needs, with a late pick- up point and a guaranteed early delivery time, will be in a strong position – especially if they are able to find the right blend of speed and cost for customers. “The ability to deliver direct
to engineers, using a secure key control and pick-up / drop off service throughout Ireland, will be a huge bonus.” One sector which currently
does benefit from tailored early morning deliveries
is
agriculture, he continues. Seasonal demands mean farmers are often working
against the clock; if equipment breaks down, it needs to be repaired fast. Suppliers bringing in
replacement parts from their European storage depots look to have them either at the dealership or in the field – literally - as quickly as possible, preferably before the start of the next working day. A further
challenge, said
Turner, is the size of the parts themselves. Some can be nuts and bolts carried in a jiffy bag, but others can be significantly larger
and heavier. Freight-
only aircraft such as BDA’s ATR- 72 provide BDA with exactly the right aircraft for the job. “Companies who can offer
a late pick-up point in Europe and a market-leading early delivery time will be in a strong position as the economy grows,” adds Turner. “Delivery before the start of the next working day is not the norm
at the moment in Ireland, but things will not stay that way for long.” BDA has a hub at Dublin
Airport plus a satellite office in Cork, with a fleet of vehicles
operating out of Dublin to all areas of Ireland, with BDA- employed drivers, using state of the art GPS tracking and allocation systems. BDA Logistics Innovation has
been shortlisted for an Irish Logistics and Transport Award in the Client and Supplier Collaboration section, for its partnerships with Suzuki, CLAAS and KUHN.
