FAMILY MATTERS / PARENTING

DOUBLING UP!

APPY FRIENDS

Dubbed ‘Tinder for Mums’, location-based social apps that allow mums to connect and develop friendships are gaining popularity. For mums who crave adult conversation or to connect with fellow parents sharing similar interests, Peanut is a free social app and the brainchild of mum Michelle Kennedy (ex-deputy CEO of dating app Badoo). The free app, which was developed in partnership with the Deliveroo co-founder Greg Orlowski, offers recommendations to connect ‘mamas’ (as they are known) on the basis of certain commonalities – age and gender of children, hobbies, languages spoken, educational background and more. • Launched in 2016 by two mums, Mush, includes a messaging feature and advice sections. Founders Sarah and Katie met in a playground when they both had a newborn strapped to their front whilst chasing around a toddler. Keeping each other sane through some lively (and dark) times they thought it shouldn’t be hard to find local mum mates. And with that, Mush was born. • Find Peanut and Mush on the iOS App Store.

What do Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Angelina Jolie

and Julia Roberts have in common? They are all parents of twins – and now Beyonce and George Clooney and his wife are joining the trend. And they are in good company – William Shakespeare was the father of boy/girl twins, Hamnet and Judith, and he also wrote about twins in The Comedy of Errors and Twelfth Night. According to the latest data, multiple births in the UK have been on the rise – twin births have risen almost 50% from 1984 to 2004. In 2004 there were 10,548 multiple births – that means that about one in 34 babies was born a twin or a triplet in the UK (compared to just one in 52 in 1982). Twins UK was launched in 2005 in response to the

growing need to provide appropriate information, advice and good quality, practical products for the increasing number of parents of twins and more. Dedicated to twins, triplets and multiple births families throughout pregnancy and early years right through to adulthood, the organisation provides specialist equipment, advice and gifts, information on twin pregnancy and multiple birth, breastfeeding, parenting tips for twins and triplets and shopping/gift guides. • Visit www.twinsuk.co.uk

All aboard!

Lego® and railway fans alike will enjoy the Bricks Britannia exhibition, open from 1st April, at the Kent & East Sussex Railway in Tenterden. On show will be more than 30 models, created solely from Lego bricks, which chart the history of Britain from the Neolithic Stonehenge through to the supersonic age of Concorde – and the centrepiece of the exhibition will be an impressive eight-metre-long model of the iconic Flying Scotsman.

The models were created by Bright Bricks (as featured in Channel 4’s Inside Lego at Christmas), and use hundreds of thousands of Lego bricks. Entry to the exhibition is

free with the purchase of a TravelCard, which permits all-day travel between Tenterden and Bodiam stations. There will also be an opportunity to join Lego building workshops.

• For more information and to book tickets, visit www.kesr. org.uk/bricks. A 10% discount applies to tickets booked in advance online.

Not so smart devices

Shocking new research commissioned by mobile phone insurance firm Row.co.uk suggests that more than 1.8 million primary school children aged six to 11 have sent sexually explicit messages on apps such as Facebook and Snapchat.

The same study also revealed a further fifth has

received rude or risky messages or even sexually explicit photographs. Despite these alarming stats, two thirds of parents are not worried about what their children could be exposed to on their smart devices – almost a fifth of parents do not monitor what their children do online at all.

Data showed girls were more likely to be caught sexting, with one in six sending rude messages, compared to just one in 20 boys.
