Oxford Instruments, the leading provider of high- technology tools and systems for research and industry with operations at Abingdon and High Wycombe, led the way among the region’s medium- sized companies when it came to share price rises in February.

The group’s Asylum Research launched a new e-commerce AFM probe store in Europe, expanding its reach for online purchasing of a wide selection of AFM probes. This followed on quickly from the launch of Vulcan, one of the fastest metals analysers with the most advanced reporting tools.

Among the top results from the smaller companies was

that of RM, the Milton Park group that provides resources, IT software and IT services to the education sector. “Every year more than a million people around the world get the marks they deserve thanks to RM Results,” said the company, which has been partnering with the world’s leading awarding bodies for over a decade to deliver reliable e-marking solutions.

Another high riser was TP Group, the Farnborough technology and services company. It has just stepped up to the challenge of the nuclear power sector by investing in the Dukinfield factory facility in the north of England.

Sustainability: a young

entrepreneur’s view One of 2016’s HWYE finalists, Darren Chadwick, has made sustainability his business. He started Brite Green in 2007 and it’s now an award-winning corporate responsibility strategy consultancy. He explains how embedding sustainability into his own company, as well as for his clients’, has unlocked significant growth

Brite Green helps growing companies win more contracts, reduce costs and manage risks by embedding environmental and social considerations into the way they work. This ranges from reducing energy and material costs to obtaining certifications like ISO 14001, the environmental management certification. Clients include the likes of Saatchi & Saatchi and London Luton Airport, as well as smaller construction, manufacturing and service companies across the UK. Brite Green provides consultancy and an innovative outsourced service to companies which don’t have an inhouse team or need more resource.

HWYE judge Peter Wright with 2016 finalist Darren Chadwick

I was only 23 when I started Brite Green and I just wanted to grow the business and create a positive impact. Now I want Brite Green to be an exemplary company and be the leading corporate responsibility consulting firm in the UK, helping our country to transition to a truly sustainable economy.

Why do you think it has been successful?

There are three main reasons we’ve been successful: we’ve remained focused on what our customers need; I’ve been able to grow an incredible team; and we’ve created a strong and supportive culture where staff have scope to do work they enjoy.

What’s the biggest challenge you face as a business owner?

Balancing working in and on

the business. Last year we grew more than 60%, which meant it was difficult to get away from delivering projects and dedicate the time needed to develop.

What do you wish you’d known when you were starting out?

While I was a technical expert when I started and really knew sustainability inside out, I wish I’d known more about business. Practical support on marketing and people management would have been transformative. I think that programmes like the HWYE awards are invaluable in supporting young people to successfully grow their business.

What’s next for your business?

We have enjoyed excellent growth in the past two years, so the next challenge for us is moving from start-up to scale up. We’ll have to recruit to keep up with our revenue growth and I need to systemise our business development processes. Exciting times.
