made it…seems that winter didn’t real- ly start until that one week in February that dumped enough snow for the entire winter. We were all taking turns pulling each other out of snow banks. We had a DELA meeting planned during that week that was cancelled due to the weather. We are sorry, we couldn’t seem to pick a day that wasn’t having more snow during that time. Soon after that, it was time for the Legislature and the Maine Fishermen’s Forum. We did real well with staying in

touch over the issues. I’d like to thank our Board of Directors for staying in touch with me during the tough times. So far, the Legislature has been going in a good direction. We, as an association, have been to Augusta to testify on the issues, with good results. Hilton and I were there the fi rst Monday after the Forum. It is always good to see people in opposition starting to open up and talk with one another. With each testimony, it seemed to open communications… which is needed. The Governor’s budget cuts re-

sulted in quite a long session at the Appropriations Committee with our Commissioner, Pat Keliher standing at the podium for over an hour going over the DMR’s proposed budget changes. I was pleased to be able to get up and speak for our lobster industry. The idea of license increases was not the best idea, and it was refl ected at the hearing. The good out come was when Gov. LePage made a surprise appearance at the Forum to announce that he does not

plan to increase the license fees. This shows that the stronger the voice, he does listen to our industry and I believe that he does care about the outcome of some of the proposals that come out of Augusta. Sometimes we just need to communicate a little more than usual! The workshops were held last week

on most of the lobster bills, with fairly good results. Rep. Will Tuell has put his best foot forward to help the Downeast sector with issues such as the Grey Zone per request of Zone A. His bill was “killed” but changes were made such as those who fi sh inside 3 miles and those who fi sh outside will be able to legally haul traps at 4am during the month of October regardless of what zone you fi sh in. For the Grey Zone, the Com- missioner was open to allowing hauling 24/7 but it needs more fi ne tuning in order to work it out. Patrolling the area is one big issue. Will believes that it is still good for the fi shermen as it forces the DMR to address some of the real problematic issues of the fi shery. We are all still working on this one, so stay tuned. We have also been asked to join together to try to stop the Coral Protec- tion Zones in the Mount Dessert area. This could be a devastating blow to the fi shing in the area. Terry Stockwell has asked that we all work together on this issue, and we certainly will help. Please stay in touch with us, as we need to know how to work with it. It is also almost time for the cruise ships to start once again…seems that the fi shermen are always being pushed to one side or

the other. The Maine Fishermen’s Forum

was a great success this year! I’d like to “Thank” each and every one that stopped by our booth and helped us. Our new member, Barbara Lawrence, author of her new book, “Ben’s Story” was a big help and an asset to communi- cations. She so graciously signed each of her books as they were sold. Barbara also donated a portion of her sales to the Forum Scholarship Fund. Thank you, Barbara! Thank you to our President, Hilton Turner, Vice President, Bob Fortin, Sec/Treas. Mike Dassatt, Ethan Turner and our Granddaughter, Audrey Marie Perce. We had quite a team! We had the pleasure of meeting our

members in person such as Steve Bro- decki of Gloucester and Colby Young. What a pair! It is always a lot of fun. Saw a lot of folks that we hadn’t seen in many years that were from the boat building world. It is always a pleasure to be surrounded by such talented crafts- men. There were fi shermen, boat racers, craftsmen, politicians, representatives, scientists and generations of families that were bringing their grown children and grandchildren. This included see- ing our family at the Forum as well. I have pictures of our daughter, Christy manning the booth when Mike and I

were exhibitors with our Mid Coast Trap Shop. In many ways, a lot of the exhib- itors are well established “family.” It is a pleasure and an honor to be serving on the Forum Board and representing such a fi ne exhibition of our Marine Industry. DELA welcomes new members:

Richard Larrabee, Sr., Stonington; Barbara Kent Lawrence, Camden; Ben Doliber, Swan’s Island; Robert Hardy, Deer Isle; Pete Woodworth of Lobster Logistics Group, LLC, Rockland. DELA is always open to new mem-

berships and welcome the support and voice from our industry. We are plan- ning a meeting in the near future….I will post it on the website and Facebook to keep you informed. Thank you, Jon Jo- hansen for your continued help with our communications in the Maine Coastal News!
