Welcoming Children to

the Lord’s Table Families, members, and staff teach our young about the sacrament of communion

BY VANESSA ROMERO

Welcoming Children to the Lord’s Table 2017 brought seven families and eight adult leaders together to explore the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. The morning was dedicated to parents, children, and volunteers engaging in a rotation of meaningful hands- on activities geared toward understanding elements of the Lord’s Supper.

Sherry Deal was showered in flour when children were learning about the communion elements and making the bread to be used for communion on February 5.

Rich Laliberte and LuAnn Epstein shared stories of giving thanks around a table set for a family dinner. Children made table graces to remind them of the day and to give thanks. Joanne Stock shared a Norwegian prayer her family said before meals, and James and Kaitlyn Stock copied the English version to their table-grace tent card.

Vanessa Romero and Pam Weiss talked with families as they remembered Jesus by matching pictures to stories of how Jesus interacted with God’s people.

We were impressed at how much the children knew!

Children loved watching their parents get wrist deep in finger paint as a banner celebrating “A community of believers” was created with the help of Shawn Morgan and Alice Stinebaugh. Check out their handiwork in the hall across from room 214.

Te children watched a DVD depicting the Lord’s Supper as scriptures from the Gospel of Matthew were read. In the meantime, their parents and caregivers spent time with pastor Mike Drake. Parents gave thanks for First Presbyterian Church being a welcoming community that supports parents in their role as primary faith educators of their children. Together they reviewed

the Presbyterian understanding of sacraments and discussed faith formation as a lifelong endeavor that starts in childhood.

Te highlight of the morning was the final gathering in the Chapel. Mike Drake (shown below with a participant) walked us through the liturgy of serving and receiving communion. Each child had the chance to ask questions and practice.

Te decision to partake in the Lord’s Supper with the community of the church belongs to each family. Our hope is that, by participating in the Welcoming Children to the Lord’s Table class, families feel empowered to make that decision confidently.

CLASS HELD ANNUALLY

Family ministry is the cornerstone of faith development for our children, and Welcoming Children to the Lord’s Table is a perfect way to support parents with family faith conversations.

The class—this year organized by Vanessa Romero and JoAnn Jones— is generally held annually. Parents are encouraged to enroll children for a morning of activity and instruction at whatever age they feel is appropriate.

For information on future classes, contact JoAnn Jones at JoAnn.Jones@ fpcallentown.org, or call the church office at 610-395-3781.
