A New Playground Funds sought to make FPCA’s campus more child-friendly BY JACK HABERER, LEAD PASTOR

After tearing down a worn-out and unsafe playground last fall, the staff, building- and-grounds team, and Session have been dreaming and designing a new playground that will ideally serve our toddlers-through- tweeners.

As I have outlined for the Session and mentioned to the congregation at the annual meeting, a bright, inviting play area gives witness to the local community that “Jesus loves kids”—and that love is expressed with fervor here at First Presbyterian Church of Allentown.

With the generous help of Tiny Tikes, designs have been drawn up, and a huge discount offered to assemble a set that brings with it a 20-year warranty.

Determined not to tap the regular budget or operating/ maintenance reserves, the Session agreed to invite individuals to make special gifts to cover the costs of an ages-2- to-5 playground set (specially designed for the preschool program—and usable by others as well).

We also have expanded our vision in the hope of adding an adjacent, separate playground for the 5-to-12-year-old crowd as well. Te young children’s area and site work will cost about $35,000, and the older children’s area would add approximately another $20,000.

At this writing, we are blessed to be partially funded. Four families stepped up quickly to give nearly $25,000—a wonderful start! We hope to collect all needed funds by early April and install the set by early May.

We look forward to having our children and those of the local community enjoying this safe and fun space very soon.
