News Flood defence

work starting WORK by developer Trenport on improving flood defences near Pe- ters Bridge on the River Medway is underway. The firm was asked to carry out

the scheme by the Environment Agency as part of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council’s planning consent for offsite works associated with the housing development. It involves a small section of flood defence between Ferry Lane and land west of Trafalgar Road in Wouldham. Riverside levels are being raised

and the length extended with con- cretewalls and other barrier work. Contractor Kent Groundworks

and Demolition is due to finish the project by Thursday, March 16.

Lottery win ends run of bad luck for florists

AGRANDDAD from Snodland, who runs Doremada Florist with his wife, is celebrating a £247,463 lottery win. Con Smith (58), believes a series

of fortunate coincidences led to his win that will bring some relief and happiness to the family after years of heartache. Mr Smith said: “We’ve had so

much sadness in the last 10 years, losing many people very close to us. Now we can look to a brighter future for the whole family. I guess you could say things really are coming up roses now! “Our change in luck started

when I broughtmy dad home from hospital. The previousweek hewas lying in a hospital bed and we had been told he had just 24 hours to live. Seven days later, he’d made a miraculous recovery and Iwas able to take him home.” Deciding his dad needed some-

thing to eat, Mr Smith went to the local chippy and while they were cooking his fish, and knowing he would not be back in Snodland in time to buy his EuroMillions ticket, he popped into the next door

newsagents to pick one up. However, itwas not until the fol- lowing morning that the dad of two, and granddad to three, re- alised he was a winner and his Lucky Dip ticket matched five main numbers and one lucky star. His partner of 38 years, Lorna

(59),was already at the florists, and before ringing Camelot, he coolly made a flower delivery for one of their customers.

Mr Smith said: “I will help out

our children, put some away for pension and pay off a few debts. We’ll probably also look at buying a new car, make a few renovations at home and maybe some new furni- ture. Then it’s a bit of investment in the florists.” He bought his winning Lucky

Dip ticket for the February 21 draw at One Stop in Beatty Road in Rochester.
