East Malling and Larkfield Parish Council Speedwatch

Aylesford Newsprint site The administrators’ agents have now submitted their planning application for the demolition of the buildings to ground level to Tonbridge and Malling Council. It can be viewed on the website or at the council offices, quoting referenece

TM/17/00493/FLEA. Once approved it is understood this will take about 40 weeks to carry out.

In respect of the main application to develop the site, various technical reports are still awaited and the council say they do not think they will be in a position to report the application for decision until the summer rather than the spring as originally thought.

New cafe/takeaway nears completion The rebuild of the former Kemlaw building, previously Kemps, is now nearing completion on the London Road, Larkfield. It will be a cafe takeaway with flats above and an area for car parking on what was the garden between it and Wealden Hall.

The building looks very similar to the 19th century one which it replaced and which generations of older Larkfield residents will recall was Geo Kemp and Son, drapers and outfitters, and with Mitchells a grocery shop next door. The new building has even kept the cellars and the ragstone wall along the frontage.

New Hythe railway station Parish Chairman David Thornewell and County Cllr Trudy Dean have met with Network Rail to discuss the possibility of

improving access to the Strood-bound platform at New Hythe Station. At present it can only be reached by steps.

Leybourne Lakes Country Park The borough council is proposing in the next financial year to extend the car park at the country park which is accessed off the roundabout from the A228.

Detailed plans have yet to be submitted for planning permission. The extension will be subject to payment as is the present car park.

The borough is also still looking at the possibility of having a visitor centre including cafe at the park and is instructing consultants to give further advice.

When the park was handed over by Berkeley Homes in 2003 the legal agreement included depositing monies for possible improvements to the site and the borough has about £700,000 of the original sum left

Horse Pond, Mill Street Works have recently been carried out by the Environment Agency to the stream in East Malling and the parish open space area was rutted. The agency has been asked to re-instate.

Parish footpath walk

The next parish footpath walk will be on Sunday, April 9 at 2.15pm, meeting at St James’ Church, East Malling. This will be a circular walk ending about 4.30pm and all are welcome. The route this year is to be out to Ditton church and round through the research station lands.

West Malling Parish Council

Parish Walk There will be a walk of the parish footpaths on Sunday, April 9, starting at 2pm at West Malling Village Hall, Norman Road, and finishing back at the Village Hall at about 4pm for light refreshments. It is a lovely time of the year to enjoy our countryside and all are welcome.

Macey’s Meadow, Norman Road Macey’s Meadow Volunteers have working party weekends to keep the growth under

control and are in need of helpers to join them on the following dates – March 11, 25 and 28, and April 22 from 10am to 12 noon. Tools will be provided. All meet at the container near the mixed woodland. Follow their progress on Facebook and Twitter.

New equipment has been obtained for the Speedwatch that operates in the parish both in Larkfield and East Malling. Training in how to use the new equipment is to be arranged and anyone interested is asked to phone the parish office 01732 844546.

Flooding KCC has been asked to look at the drainage system where Lunsford Lane joins the A20. During recent rains the corner is flooding again and the parish council feels there may be a blockage.

Churchyards

The borough council has ended grants to parish councils towards the maintenance of churchyards. The parish council will however continue to maintain the closed churchyard at Holy Trinity, Larkfield, which was passed to it some years ago following a Privy Council closure order. It will also continue to cut the grass at the still open churchyard at St James the Great, East Malling.

Christmas lighting

The borough council has notified the parish council that it has decided to continue with the arrangements where it and parish councils jointly help with the provision of Christmas lighting at designated shopping centres throughout the borough. This means the lights at Martin Square will continue to be arranged by the traders there with the usual grants for this year’s Christmas.
