Wäber I.94; Cox 17; Neate S165; Perret 4151. Leslie Stephen (1832- 1904), a writer and critic, was one of the foremost climbers of the golden age of Alpinism. Though not a founding member of the Alpine Club, he soon joined, having already climbed in the Alps. The Playground of Europe offers a magnificent record of this period of Alpine mountaineering, and indeed “his book ranks among the best in climbing literature” (Neate).

Wäber 275; Perret 4157. Studer (1804-1890) was a pioneer of climbing and exploration in Switzerland. Over the course of fifty years he made hundreds of ascents, and in 1863 was a founding member of the Swiss Alpine Club. The Topographische Mittheilungen first appeared in 1843, and was immediately reissued the following year. It contains details of Studer’s travels and ascents in the Bernese Alps, with an accompanying Atlas of extending panoramas of the Jungfrau, the Æggischhorn, and other peaks in the region.

Wäber II.129. Symonds (1840-93), a writer, spent long periods in Switzerland for health reasons. He and his daughter produced the present work, originally published in 1892. This much revised second edition was issued for A & C Black’s colour series, and contains coloured illustrations by Harwicke Lewis specially commissioned for this edition. It also adds a new preface by Symonds’ daughter.
