YONEX ALL ENGLAND OPEN BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS: THE BEST ARE BACK

Both Jorgensen &

Axelsen will hope to be the first Dane to win the Men’s Singles since Peter Gade in 1999

Victor Axelsen Son Wan Ho

Of course, the one man who has what it takes to beat Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei is Chen Long as he proved in Rio when he was crowned Olympic Champion. However, the tall Chinese must play above par if he hopes to win his first Superseries title since the Denmark Open in 2015. Chen won here in 2013, 2015 and will hope for a hat trick in 2017.

Another leading contender is Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen who broke his Superseries jinx in Dubai. The young Dane had failed to deliver in all of the previous finals that he has played, but at the Superseries Finals he beat Tian Houwei to rise to No.3 in the BWF World Rankings.

His compatriot Jan Jorgensen has also been in form with a great outing in the China Open last November, beating Chen Long to become the first European to conquer on Chinese soil.

Both Jorgensen and Axelsen will hope to be the first Dane to win the Men’s Singles since Peter Gade in 1999.

Others to watch include Korea’s Son Wan Ho and Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long, whilst home support will once again be focussed on Rajiv Ouseph.

The Women’s Singles promises to be equally unpredictable. Tai Tzu Ying can be relied upon to mount a tough-minded challenge to become Chinese Taipei’s first ever winner. The level of play she showed in Dubai can certainly make it happen.

Spain’s Carolina Marin will try to repeat her success of 2015 when this tournament saw the beginning of her amazing winning strike, leading to two world titles and Olympic Gold. This is where it all started for the uncompromising yet amazingly talented
