Last eight draw:

• Amman United v Burry Port • Caerphilly v Taffs Well • Cardigan v Milford Haven • Swansea Uplands v Cilfynydd

CARDIGAN put in an excellent

performance last Saturday (Jan 14), as they beat north Wales side Denbigh 23-7 to reach the last eight of the National Bowl. Cardigan made it to the fifth round

with a narrow 13-8 win over Betws in the previous round after wins over Usk and Laugharne in rounds three and two. The home side went ahead early on

with a penalty from Iestyn Crompton and soon after they had their first try thanks to Emyr Harries. Kieran Hurley then added

Cardigan’s second try of the half and Crompton then added the extra two points to put the home side in a strong position. Tomos Evans was next to make his way over the line for Cardigan’s third try

but this time Crompton was unable to add the conversion. Denbigh did give themselves some

hope late on in the first half when Jamie Winnings went over, with Dan O’Sullivan adding the extra two points. That meant the home side held a

20-7 lead at the break and the second half was a tight affair with neither side wanting to make a mistake. Cardigan had chances to increase

their lead, but were unable to make the break through as their handling let them down on some occasions. The only points of the second half

came when Crompton added a second penalty and they held on for an excellent win.

The side from North Wales also

came close to adding to the scoring but Cardigan defended well to secure a place in the last eight of the competition. Cardigan team: 15. John Lumb, 14.

Rhydian Jenkins, 13. Marcus Castle, 12. Emyr Harries, 11. Dafydd Watkins, 10. Iestyn Crompton, 9. Llyr Jones, 1. Tomos Evans, 2. Aled Phillips, 3. Ben Hughes, 4. Dean Harries, 5. Dylan Davies, 6.

Gareth Clifford, 7. Kieran Hurley, 8. Llyr Griffiths, 16. Bedwyr Davies, 17. Richard Jones, 18. Rob Connolly, 19. Gethin Jones, 20. Sion Hughes. The draw for the last eight was made

on Wednesday (Jan 18), with Cardigan drawn at home against fellow League 3 West A side Milford Haven. Cardigan and Milford have played each other once so far this season in

a match which they won by 19 points to eight and they will be looking for a repeat of that as they hope to make it to the last four of the competition. That match will take place on

Saturday, February 18. Cardigan have only lost one match

in the league this season and their players will be itching to get going against their Pembrokeshire rivals.
