7 Project Aspire: Working for Merrow Residents
WOW! What a fantastic response we have had from the Merrow community about Project Aspire!
You may remember that we mentioned in our last article in The Merrow Pages that Project Aspire is a Guildford Borough Council initiative that seeks to empower local communities to help and take care of their neighbours. We asked that Merrow’s community groups come forward and apply for some Project Aspire grant funding to help build on and strengthen local community spirit. Well, you certainly did and we are delighted with the response.
For this round of funding we have awarded grants to:
• Bushy Hill Community Club • The Lifetrain Trust • The Matrix Trust • Bushy Hill Junior School • LB Posture Training • Voluntary Action South West Surrey • 1st Merrow Scout Group
The grants have been awarded for a variety of things. These range from replacing chairs and tables at the community centre, to inspiring young people in Merrow to access activities and wider provision to help them progress as individuals, to providing a young leaders programme for 14 – 17 year olds, to helping children and members of the local school community to grow plants and food on school grounds and providing a Taiso class for gentle exercise and socialising for our senior members of Merrow.
Some really great projects and we are looking forward to working with them all. Our lead councillor for Project Aspire, Dr Iseult Roche has said that “Aspire is here to help communities and enable people to contribute towards and have pride in their own local areas. We want to help support residents in Merrow to take initiative and work with us to get the most for and from their local community. We have been thrilled by the variety and nature of the bids that came forward for funding and look forward to progress.”
We really hope that the readers of The Merrow Pages, along with your family and friends, will get involved in Project Aspire and support your local community groups. We, of course, are also here to help if you would like to start up your own group or have an idea that you would like to bring to Merrow to help enhance community spirit and neighbourliness.

We are holding a Merrow Network Lunch on 8 March at the Methodist church hall which you are very welcome to come along to – just let us know and we will make sure we have enough sandwiches!
