35 Thought for the Month
The month of March marks the beginning of Lent. According to a fairly common Church tradition, Lent is used as a motive to improve ourselves by being more reflective, spending more time contemplating our relationship with God and the world around us. From the time we were children, our first question for Lent was often, “What are you giving up for Lent?” Giving something up for Lent is a custom that, when we were younger, helped us enter into a season with a sense of purpose and a greater awareness.
As adults, we might want to consider looking at Lent in a deeper way. Lent is not simply about us giving up something. The real grace is when we recognise that Lent is a season in which God wants to give us something. God wants to help us transform our lives and make us more free as people. Not just more free

with God but in the way in which we live our lives and love our families and neighbours.
This month let us ponder on some deeper questions. Let us reflect and ask what we would like to change about ourselves. What pattern of behaviour in my life needs changing? What do I need more of in my life? Patience? Selflessness? Do I need more loving and accepting behaviour towards those around me? We all can think of something that gets in the way of our being loving and self-sacrificing.
Patience, selflessness, love, self-sacrifice make us wise and bring sweet rewards. The practice of these promotes peace, harmony and goodwill in our own being, families and communities. A move towards adding more of these attributes into our life will certainly help make all our relationships healthier.
With the turmoil our world is going through currently, a positive change in thinking and practice seems necessary to reverse or at least put a halt to any further deterioration in the quality of life and relationships. Change is by no means an easy task, it requires dedication and boldness, and the encouraging fact is that God helps those who step out bravely to spread love and peace.
God bless,
Revd Asif Das, Merrow Methodist Church
