Egham-based Spectris, the productivity-enhancing instrumentation and controls company, headed the region’s large quoted companies when it came to share price rises in December.


Its shares rose 13% following an announcement that its PANalytical company, which it acquired from Philips in 2002, was to be merged with Malvern Instruments, another of its operating companies acquired in 1997.


“The companies are both world-leading suppliers of analytical instrumentation,” said a statement. “The combined entity is a strong player in the materials characterisation market and will be able to leverage the strengths of the


individual companies in their end markets.”


The new president of the merged company is Paolo Carmassi, most recently operating partner at CSTS Healthcare.


Top performance of the month (up 32%) was by D4t4 Solutions, the Sunbury-on-Thames company that specialises in all forms of data solutions, from collection to storage and management to analytics. A few months ago it changed its name from IS Solutions, that had been the company’s title since it was established 31 years ago.


Another top performer from the smaller companies was Triad Group (up 29%), the Godalming- based group that helps clients to become more efficient and competitive through technology.

Oxfordshire’s winning young entrepreneur


The 2017 Haines Watts Young Entrepreneur of the year competition launches next month. If you’re thinking about entering, Dan Greenall, 22 and last year’s winner, explains his particular path to success


Dan was 17 when he started trading as a franchise called Vapertrails of Oxford on a retail merchandising unit in a shopping centre. He says, “I’d attended the Peter Jones entrepreneurship college course in Bournemouth, where the aim was to create a business and begin trading nine months later. I chose e-cigarettes as I saw the potential for the consumer market.


“My vision was to run a profitable business in retail and to attempt to help as many people as possible use a healthier alternative to cigarettes; the same product helped my father and I to switch.”


What do you put your success down to?


“I believe my success is due to spotting a potentially huge growth market, which was sustainable. It wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t believed in myself. My dad helped me with the franchise business and others around me gave moral support and believed in me too. After six months trading I left the


franchise and established Oxford Vapours, sourcing better priced, quality products from suppliers globally.”


What challenges did/ do you face?


“My biggest challenge as a business owner is trying to bring a moral and equality- based ethos into a capitalist environment. You have to accept that mistakes will be made but you have to dust yourself off and carry on.


“Work/life balance can be a problem; being an owner at my age is difficult and if I hadn’t concentrated on the business I don’t think I would have been able to achieve what I have. However, you’d be amazed what opportunities arise when you socialise with others; simply hearing their views can help with the development of some of the best concepts.


“I’m currently implementing processes which allow me to take a step back from the daily running of the business so that I can focus on future goals and possibilities.”


A final piece of advice?


“Believe in yourself – you have the ability to achieve whatever you set your mind to. Winning the HWYE competition was one of my goals.”
