Turfgrass Seed 2017 Annual publication now available to download
The Buyers Guide to Quality Amenity Turfgrass - Turfgrass Seed 2017 - is available now to download in PDF format.
The development of grass varieties for amenity uses is a long-term, costly and sophisticated business. Plant breeding (crossing, selecting and conducting trials) typically takes a decade or more, before varieties are ready for release into Governmental registration and Industry performance trials.
Subsequent investment in production, stock-holding, manufacturing and marketing is expensive. The exploitation and utilisation of the superior varieties made available by this process require expert guidance and advice.
The purpose of Turfgrass Seed is to report comprehensive results of available varieties in trials designed to test suitability for:
- Use in winter sports pitches, such as football and rugby fields, and municipal recreation areas (Sports Uses Trials).
- Use in lawns, summer sports pitches, tennis courts, turf and general landscaping (Lawns Landscaping, Summer Sports and Turf Trials).
- Use in intensive management as seen on golf and bowling greens (Greens, Close Mown Trials).

Syngenta award for
‘champion’ Steve Top award for Operation Pollinator champion
John O’Gaunt Golf Club greenkeeper and regular contributor to Pitchcare, Steve Thompson, has picked up the prestigious Syngenta Operation Pollinator Award, for the golf club’s consistently outstanding ecological habitat creation and management.
The Award was presented to Steve at the Golf Environment Awards ceremony at BTME Harrogate, along with colleagues Kevin Armstrong and Chris Watts of the John O’Gaunt greenkeeping team.
As one of the great champions of the Operation Pollinator initiative -
set up to introduce more bee- friendly wildflower areas around golf courses - Steve has successfully overseen the planting and management of more than three hectares of dedicated habitat; welcomed by the club’s players and a wealth of pollinating insects.
Steve commented: “Operation Pollinator was the instigator of our habitat creation that has now become an integral part of our wider environmental management plan for wildlife and biodiversity around the courses.”
