Step 4: Yachatz Breaking the Middle Matzah The person leading the Seder breaks the middle matza and hides the larger half in a napkin. The middle matza is set aside for the Afikomen. There are three Matzot so we can break one, and still have two, which symbolize the double portion of manna that fell in the desert on erev Shabbat.
Step 5: Maggid Reciting the Haggadah After the first four steps, we are ready to relive the Exodus story. Telling the story begins with the youngest child asking the Four Questions. The first and greatest freedom of all is the freedom to ask, probe, explore and challenge. Not only are we free to ask, we must ask. Healthy questions allow us to grow so we may tell the story….
“OUR STORY”
Step 6: Rachtza Washing the Hands After we recite the story (Maggid), we reach a new level. Just as we washed our hands at the beginning of the Seder (Urchatz), we wash our hands again only this time we say the blessing.
See page 7
Step 7 & 8: Motzi –Matzah Reciting the Blessing HaMotzi and eating the Matzah The leader of the Seder takes the broken half-Matzah and the two whole ones from the Seder plate and holds them while reciting the blessing for Matzah. See page 7
Step 9: Maror Eating Bitter Herbs
Following the Matzah we eat the bitter maror and reflect on the self-sacrifice of previous generations who gave up so much. Today millions of Jewish descendants sit around Seder tables around the world celebrating freedom. See page 7
Step 10: Korech Eating a Sandwich of Matzah and Maror We now make a Matzah and maror sandwich, combining the Matzah’s earthiness with the maror’s bitterness, leaning to the left.
