News OAP on ‘stabbing’ charge Mini ‘driven

A PENSIONER has appeared be- fore magistrates charged with the attempted murder of a manager at a block of retirement flats in the centre of Maidstone. Fred Butcher appeared in court on January 28 after the incident at Hengist Court, Marsham Street, Maidstone, two days previously. He is accused of the attempted murder of Mina Turner (59), who works as a manager at the sheltered block. She is understood to have suf- fered severe stomach and wrist wounds, allegedly caused by stab- bing.

According to reports, Mr Butcher

will plead not guilty and elect to be sent for trial by jury. The bespectacled, 79-year-old pen-

sioner, who lives in the retirement block, was not asked to enter a plea by the court. The alleged victim was rushed to hospital in London after the incident, where she underwent four hours of surgery. She isnowthought to be re- covering at Kings College Hospital. The aftermath saw a massive po-

lice and emergency services pres- ence descend on Marsham Street as well as massive interest from the media.
