18-storey flats to have high-rise allotments

MODERN tower blocks will start emerging from the ground by the end of the year at the entrance to the north of the town. Rising to 18 storeys, developers

U+I say the £100m contract to create the high-rise homes is likely to be complete in two to three years and will provide more new homes to buy and 220 for rent. The development, which will in-

clude a variety of studio flats and one, two and three-bedroom units on vacant land off Royal Engineers Road, next to Springfield library roundabout, has been approved in full by the borough council. Designer Guy Hollaway says the scheme includes a range of buildings – from eight to 18 storeys – that will mark the gateway to Maidstone town centre. He added: “The ‘build to rent’ element will bring another dimension to the local housing mar- ket, with the properties dedicated to private renters, encouraging long- term tenancies that help to create a sustainable community.” But the plan to redevelop the for-

mer paper mill site, facing the River Medway, has not been without its critics, with anger over permission being given by planning officers for 310 new homes, with just 187 park- ing spaces and architectural features including rooftop allotments, anout- door area accessible to the public and a club lounge for tenants. U+I intends to remain the land-

lord, supported by an on-site man- agement team. The development will include 177sqm of retail and community space. Richard Upton, deputy chief exec-

utive of U+I believes the proposals will deliver a “well-designed scheme

on a prominent gateway site”, adding: “The project team has worked hard to develop a creative and compelling vision for Royal En- gineers Road.” Commenting on the lack of park-

ing, a spokesman said provisionwas in line with local and county policy, adding: “The site is in a highly sus- tainable location, being a shortwalk from Maidstone east station and sus- tainable modes of transport will be further encouraged, with a cycle store on site. “The parking includes two spaces

for Car Club vehicles, giving resi- dents the ability to hire a vehicle.”
