Crash victim’s funeral appeal

FAMILY and friends of Clive Mauger, who died in a crash on Blue Bell Hill are raising money to pay for him to be laid to rest with his late wife in Jersey. Atotal of more than £500was do-

nated in one day towards the on- line target of £5,000 launched to ease the burden of his funeral costs and repatriating his body to St He- lier where his wife is buried. This had risen to more than £1,300 at the time of going to press. Mr Mauger (69), of Devon Close, Chatham, was killed after he is thought to have swerved to avoid a mattress in the road on Monday, January 20. He was heading to Maidstone to help a sick friend. The widower had been left to

bring up their four children when his wife died suddenly, more than 20 years ago. After their loss, the family moved from Jersey to Chatham. The GoFundMe appeal says: “He

never got over losing her and his family has suffered terrible loss and pain and still do today. It has been

very hard for the children over the years in losing theirmumand now they have to endure the same tragedy again in losing their dad, together with trying to cope with other circumstances. “Clive did not have life or funeral

cover and the funds are desperately needed to help his children carry out their father's life-long wish to return home to be buried with his late wife, their loving mother Maria, whom they lost when they were young. “The funds will enable them all

to travel to the funeral and say their goodbyes and know they have fi- nally reunited their mum and dad to rest in peace. “Any help anyone can give with funeral costs will be greatly appre- ciated. Clive was not only a father, he was a grandfather to two small granddaughters who sadly will never have the memories they should have of their grandpa.” To donate, go to the website, www.gofundme.com/bluebell- hilldeathcrash.

ONE could say that the latest adventure ofMaidstone’s John Shanley (pictured) is a bit of a busman’s holiday. However, the youth outreach worker, from Maidstone, who does

plenty of physical exercise as part of his job and loves walking at the weekend, is going up in the world. He has volunteered to

climb 4,167m to the summit ofMount Toubkal in Morocco in May, to raise money for the Kenward Trust rehabilitation centre near Maidstone, where he works. The centre’s 54-year-old

projectmanager for its Think Differently programme manages a preventive, early intervention and outreach- focused substance misuse service for young people. John, who recently moved

from Loose to Bower Place, sees the Kenward Trust’s Challenge Event as a great way to raise money and achieve a once-in-a-lifetime experience. He said: “I am doing this trek to support the work of Kenward Trust

and all it is doing to support people from all walks of life who have slipped into addiction. Overmy years it has been very rewarding to see a person who is lost to addiction come out the other side full of life and to meet the real person they are and not the person who first walked through the door.” He hopes to raise enough to fund a free place for someone at the centre, which has operated in Yalding for 49 years.
