More Than Ever by Paul Andrew Doyle, Publisher & Chief Delivery Boy First Humor The Verbal Commute

this a speed trap? I gunned my car to 5 miles an hour and end- ed up getting a ticket. Kidding! I fi gure, in general, if you are

Santa Rosa, CA. ~ More than ever we are all in need of Up- beat Times! “Paul, you should franchise this paper!” a friend says to me recently. “I should!”, I respond. I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. More than ever I realize that for the health of

the world we need

to know what is working and positive answers to our most daunting fears. Another person I spoke to says, “I never even turn on the news any more! I stopped my subscriptions

to

the daily newspapers and even the weeklies, and I am frankly tired of all the bad news and complaining, issues and nega- tivity.” You cant stop all the informa-

tion being blasted at us, but you can choose most of what you want to see and absorb. Stay informed, educated and open- minded, I say. Yes, a lot of com- munications material where ever we go is mostly fi lled with

fear oriented material, gos- sip and peoples rants, issues & raves and at the same time it has bits and pieces of positive stuff . It’s not all bad. As I was driving northbound

in southern Oregon I had to crack up at the sign I was driving by because I had been warned that there were various spread traps when you least ex- pected them. But...I

thought,

how do I drive 3 miles an hour? I had to be careful for sure. Was

doing the speed limit where-ev- er you are, you really don’t need to worry about getting a speed- ing ticket! I’ve only had two in my life and one I deserved. It was a windy evening in the fall of 1982 and I was driving 38 mph in a 30 mph zone. I missed the sign. T e offi cer came to the window to inform me of my violation and I said, “I was go- ing to fast wasn’t I?” “Yes, but you can go to driving school since it is your fi rst ticket”, he says. I waited for him to write it out and hand it to me, and I also a-Paul-o-gized for break- ing the law then said jokingly, ‘Are you sure you weren’t clock- ing the tree. I mean, the wind has been blowing in gusts up to 40 mph.’ T e look he gave me was priceless. Of course, I had

already tucked the ticket into the glove box. I knew instantly I was being slightly sarcastic and said to the offi cer, ‘I’m kid- ding...just joking! I deserved the ticket, but was trying to have a bit of fun. He wasn’t... but I was. I drove away under the speed limit all the way back to my house one block away.

Patient to the eye doctor: “Whenever I drink coffee, I have this sharp, excruciating pain.” “Try to remember to remove the spoon from the cup before drinking.”
