tion and related services under the IDEA?” Te answer: “Transportation includes travel to and from school and between schools; travel in and around school buildings; and specialized equipment such as special or adapted buses, lifts and ramps, if required to provide special transportation for a child with a disability.” With this information as a starting point, the next ques- tion to be answered is: “Who determines whether transpor- tation services are required and how those services should be implemented?” Te response is: “Te IEP Team is respon- sible for determining if transportation is required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education and related services, and how the transportation services should be implemented. Te IEP should describe the transporta- tion services to be provided…” Further clarification in this section states: “…Many


children with disabilities can receive the same transportation provided to non-disabled children, consistent with the least restrictive environment (LRE) requirements and these ser- vices can be a fundamental component of the provision of a free appropriate public education (FAPE)…” Research has shared that the majority of children with disabilities ride on neighborhood routes in the same manner as their non-dis- abled peers and do not require the related service transpor- tation. When reviewing each child’s unique needs the IEP team at minimum, should ask the following questions: Does a child eligible for special education and related


services require transportation to receive a FAPE? Can the child access a FAPE utilizing the same transporta-


tion service, in the LRE, as children without a disability or does the child require specialized equipment and services? If a child requires specialized equipment and services, can these be provided on the same school bus as children without disabilities? Or does the child require service on a separate school bus that provides specialized equipment, services and trained personnel to meet the child’s individual needs? require qualified personnel such as behavioral specialists, oc- cupational and physical therapists, nurses, and psychologists to attend the IEP meeting. Other specialists, depending on the child’s unique needs, may be required to also attend. Unequivocally, transportation personnel should always be invited to IEP meetings to discuss the impact of daily service delivery for children with specialized needs.
