Challenges Transportation Departments Say Tey Are Encountering When Busing Students On the Autism Spectrum
Te following comments were made during the most recent School Transportation News survey. Te discussion focuses on the difficulties transportation departments are faced with when accommodating to the needs of students with autism on buses. Turn to page 16 for more on “Secured Transport.”
“Since so many students are now ‘labeled’ with ASD (Autism Spectrum
Disorder), it is almost impossible to keep up with it. Each case is a case all by itself. And the spectrum is so vast anymore, it appears everyone is ASD. I be- lieve many of these diagnoses are not really ASD, but it seems to be easy for doctors to label this as part of the spectrum. Te challenges each bus driver and attendant meet with the students is not a ‘rubber stamp.’” — Steve Daniels Safety & Training Specialist, Hernando School District Brooksville, Florida
“Lack of communication between school/aids to the drivers as well as the
program specialist. Drivers need to know triggers and likes and dislikes of the children.” — Raychel Cupit Supervisor of Transportation, Sylvan School District Modesto, California
“Te distances buses have to travel to take students out of district to par- ticipate in programs they need.” — David Hartzell Director of Transportation, Harrison School District 2 Colorado Springs, Colorado
For the Record
“Final Word?” in the January issue incorrectly named Michael Slife of the Illinois Department of Education at the conclusion of the article on page 34. STN regrets this oversight.
