KEEPING STUDENTS COOL FOR 20 YEARS.
Scott ,with his 13 years of experience, is one of four leaders in the garage, the others being daytime lead mechanic Michael Broberg and Head Mechanic David Farley, both of whom are ASE Master school bus techs, along with Fleet Manager Michael Burton. Combined, the other three have more than 100 years of experience in Salem-Keizer’s shop. Te guys oversee a current crew of 11 mechanics, who use a blend of preventive and predictive maintenance programs for 463 total vehicles, roughly 275 being school buses, in addition to 38 activity vehicles. Te rest are a mixture of shop trucks, emergency response vehicles, maintenance depart- ment and custodial vehicles, food service and delivery trucks. In addition to transmission oil and filters, engine oil and filters, differentials, air dryer desiccant and valve adjust- ments, Burton added that the garage’s schedule services include safety inspections, annual brake inspections and Oregon Department of Education certifications. Like most districts nationwide, Salem-Keizer isn’t im- mune to a mechanic shortage. Burton said that the district is looking to fill two openings at the time of this writing, and considering salary boosts to remain competitive in the area. To help out, current technicians will substitute drive, which Farley did regularly this past school year. Farley was actually originally hired as a school bus driver in April 1979 before transitioning to the garage in 1985. “David is a man that will answer a question for a driver or staff member to help them understand what a bus is doing at any time,” said Denise Newton, the district’s driver trainer.
