Deadline to return spiny lobster report cards closed April 30
What’s Up: The deadline for divers and anglers to return their spiny lobster report cards to state offi cials was April 30. All report cards were required to be returned by law, even if an angler or diver failed or did not attempt to catch any lobster during the 2015-16 recre- ational season. Anglers and divers who purchased
multiple report cards must return all of them back to the state, whether or not they include any data or information of lobsters caught during the past six months. California’s Department of Fish and
Wildlife (DFW) uses the report cards to collect data and manage the state’s spiny lobster fi shery. Data is also used to monitor the health and viability of the species.
The Bottom Line: Those who failed to return their report cards in by the April 30 deadline must either pay a $21.60 fee to be allowed to dive or hunt for spiny lobsters in the 2016-17 season. Alterna- tively anglers and divers who missed the April 30 deadline could avoid the $21.60 fee by sitting out the 2016-17 season and obtaining a report card at no extra cost for the 2017-18 season.
Recreational Pacifi c halibut season opened May 1
What’s Up: The recreational Pacifi c halibut fi shery season kicked off on May 1 and will continue in managed spurts through Oct. 31 or until a federally-man- dated quota is reached. This year’s halibut catch quota is 29,640 pounds, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW), or 4,420 pounds more than last year’s quota. Open dates for recreational halibut
fi shing will be May 1-15, June 1-15, July 1-15, Aug. 1-15 and Sept. 1-Oct. 31. The season could end earlier if the man- dated quota is reached before Oct. 31. DFW fi eld staff will monitor catches at public launch ramps and charter boat landings and communicate catch data with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and International Pacifi c Halibut Commission. The NMFS has authority to shut down the fi shery once the mandated quota is reached.
The Bottom Line: The quota and frac- tured season dates only apply to Pacifi c halibut, which differs from California halibut. Catch projections will be posted on the DFW website weekly so anglers could track the progress of the fi shery in relation to the quota. Call NMFS at 800-662-9825 for more information about halibut fi sheries.

Catching forks and stingers
Lori Heath reeled in a 19-pound, 3-ounce yellowtail on an open party boat on April 30 as part of the International Yellowtail Derby 2016. The derby started April 30 and runs through June 5 off the coast of San Diego. Anglers participate in the derby either on private boats or as individuals on an open party boat (such as Heath). Meanwhile Dina Summerford caught
some stingers while kayak fi shing off the Dana Point coast in late April. Earlier in the month she and her boy- friend made the news when they both interacted with a shark while kayak fi shing.
