CG reminds boaters of importance of maintaining Emergency Locator Beacons
WASHINGTON (LOG NEWS SERVICE) — The Coast Guard and the National Safe Boating Council remind recreational boaters of the importance of having 406 megahertz emergency loca- tor beacons aboard to facilitate rescue in case of an emergency, keeping their beacon’s registra- tion updated and checking them regularly for proper operation. “Having a properly regis-
tered beacon greatly enhances the speed with which the Coast Guard can respond to any mariners in distress,” said Edward Huntsman, recreational boating
the two-fl oor structure; addi- tional energy resources can be provided through optional wind and water turbines located on the top and below the main disk. The UFO’s main struc-
ture, according to company co-founders, can be aligned with the compass, keeping the position angle, oriented on the desired cardinal direction, even in rough sea conditions. “The UFO will maintain position and stability safely, thanks to a special elastic anchor system,” a Jet Capsule representative explained in an
safety program manager at the Eighth Coast Guard District in New Orleans. BoatUS, in a release, cited
three maintenance tips for 406 MHz beacons — Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons for boats and Personal Locator Beacons for individual use on land or sea: • Test your beacon: cospas-
sarsat.int/.
• Check the battery’s expiration date: If your battery is expired and it is not a user replace- able battery, contact the beacon’s manufacturer to fi nd an authorized repair center near you.
• Update the beacon’s reg- istration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:

Kannad Marine issues recall on Safelink EPIRBs
WASHINGTON (LOG NEWS SERVICE) — Kannad Marine has issued a recall of all SAFELINK Manual and Auto GPS EPIRBs due to a possible defect that could result in the beacon not operat- ing in emergency situations. The Coast Guard said in
a safety alert that it strongly recommends that all owners and users of Kannad Safelink EPIRBs identifi ed in the recall notice not use them as a primary Search and
Rescue beacon aboard their ves- sels and should seek replacement devices as soon as possible. Kannad said in its release that the Safelink EPIRB’S yellow body plastic may prematurely age when subjected to specifi c environmental conditions which has the potential to impact on its long term effectiveness in the fi eld. Kannad said the Safelink EPIRB models with parts numbers K1202311 or K1202367 are the only Kannad Marine products affected. Kannad recommends that all
owners of Safelink EPIRBs register their ownership, location and contact details at safelinkepirb-
