I see the next generation of GPS technology in the use of drones being dispatched to incident locations. Perhaps drones will follow buses using GPS technology to give transporta- tion departments and maybe even parents real-time information. Tat is the future that we are currently looking into. And we are excited about it. ●


Federal Report Claims Positive Effects of Diesel Emissions Reduction Funding


In March, the EPA released a report that claims programs under the Diesel


Emissions Reduction Act have resulted $12.6 billion in cumulative public health benefits, with school buses and the students they transport coming out as especially big winners. To date, an EPA spokesman said DERA grants and rebates have upgraded more than 30,000 school buses. In all, the study reported that federal funds have prevented the emissions of 18,900 tons of hydrocarbon and more than 4.8 million tons of carbon dioxide, which the EPA added, is equivalent to the annual emissions from about 900,000 cars. Te re- port also stated that nearly 13,000 diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs), plus those with closed crankcase ventilation, have been installed on school buses via DERA funding, as well as approximately 1,400 diesel particulate filters (DPFs). Te EPA said the DOCs alone reduce PM by 20 percent and DPFs can reduce PM by up to 99 percent. “Te school bus industry has been a valuable partner to the National Clean Diesel Campaign,” the agency spokesman told School Transportation News. “School buses were selected as the fleet for the pilot DERA rebate program because children’s health is a priority for EPA. Additionally, the NCDC has a long and successful history with the school bus sector on clean diesel projects.” ●
