Hilda Taylor We were saddened to learn of the death of Hilda Taylor, aged 89, who commenced work in pathology in 1944 in the Emergency Medical Laboratory at Shrodells Hospital, Watford, which later became the Peace Memorial Hospital and then Watford General Hospital. At retirement she held the post of Chief 2 MLSO in the Public Health Laboratory, Watford After joining the Institute as a Student

member in 1946, she passed the Intermediate examination and then Finals in Haematology & Blood Transfusion and then Bacteriology, to become a Fellow in 1951. She then added a Final in Parasitology to her portfolio in 1958. Throughout her career and after her

retirement, Hilda was actively involved in Institute affairs, serving as secretary to the Junior Section of the London branch and then as London branch secretary. Hilda founded the Hertfordshire sub-branch and served it for many years as secretary and then chairman. She had a great love for parasitology and was invited to join the IMLT Parasitology Advisory Committee; unfortunately she was unable to accept due to lack of support from her employer. Hilda served on the History Committee for 18 years and was very involved in its

work, particularly in the collection, identification and archiving of instruments and publications, as well as the production of the displays at Triennial conferences and at Congress. Hilda also donated her own collection of books and early instruments to the Institute. Her last attendance at Congress was in 2007 when failing eyesight prevented further active participation. Unfortunately, further deterioration in her eyesight and her

mobility forced her, very reluctantly, to retire from the committee in 2011. It was her health that also led her to retire as secretary to the Medical Sciences Historical Society (MSHS), a post she held for 20 years. In 2011 Hilda was elected a Life

Member of the Institute for her services, and at the Annual General Meeting was presented with her award, and her 50-Year Medal – somewhat overdue as at that time she had been a member for 66 years! There was much more to Hilda’s long life

than science and the Institute. She was an accomplished needlewoman and enjoyed cooking; anyone who attended MSHS meetings will remember ‘Hilda’s teas’. In addition, she was a very involved member of her church and a member of the Watford and West Herts Scottish Society. In her early years she travelled extensively in Europe on her trusty motorcycle. In retirement she returned to the Peace Memorial, now the Peace Hospice, as a volunteer archivist researching the history of the hospital and generally assisting with its day-to-day work. The most common comment made on

learning of her death was that Hilda was a “lovely lady”; warm, generous and uncomplaining. She will be missed. Hilda had no living relatives but we offer our condolences to her very many friends.
