County alters permit and slip fees for 41st annual Halibut Derby
What Happened: A permit fee was reduced and slip fee waived for the 41st annual Halibut Derby in Marina del Rey, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors determined on March 29. The county’s Department of Beaches and Harbors will reduce permit fees to $150 and waive three-boat slip fees for the duration of the derby, which lasts two days. Three-boat slip fees run $207 a piece.

Salton Sea Recreation Area re- opens boat launch ramp
What Happened: Recreational boaters seeking additional opportunities to navi- gate inland waterways were given some good news on March 25: California State Parks announced a public-private partner- ship to re-open a boat launch ramp at Salton Sea. The Varner Harbor and Launch Ramp on the eastern shore of Salton Sea, one of two public areas where recreational boaters can access the water, will be re- opened thanks to a collaboration between California State Parks, Salton Sea Action Committee and DEVCO, a construc- tion firm. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was
reportedly held at the boat launch ramp area in late March. DEVCO performed dredging and repair
work.
What’s On Tap: Recreational boaters and anglers can now access the Salton Sea from the Varner Harbor and Launch Ramp. Boaters are required to pay a $3 boat launch fee and $5 day use fee. Call 760-393-3059 for more informa-
