A WEEK WILDCARD WEATHER: The first big wave of El Niño storms swept through the region this week keeping virtually all of the sportfishing fleet in port since Jan. 4. It will be hard to judge the impact of the cold, wet weather on the ocean fishing until things clear

out for a few days. But before the storms, there was still a lot of local yellowtail, increasing signs of white seabass (fish to 65 pounds reported) at Rocky Point and Catalina, and even reports of bluefin tuna and yellowtail at the offshore banks. There were also red crabs galore at Catalina Island (and other spots all along the coast) which, if water temperatures hold and the crabs stay around, could reignite the bite on exotics closer to shore.
MEXICAN YELLOWTAIL AND ROCKFISH: Before the storms, the overnight and longer boats running out of San Diego into Mexican waters were finding excellent yellowtail and rockfish action. Chief out of H&M Landing returned from a 1.5-day trip on Jan. 3 and the 31 anglers on board had 64 yellowtail, 225 rock- fish (in Mexican waters), 16 lingcod, four bonito and a barracuda. Pacific Queen out of Fisherman’s Landing was also on a 1.5-day trip that returned Jan. 3 and the 33 anglers aboard had 165 yellowtail, 113 rockfish and 30 lingcod. These two trips were to the Colonet region. Even a few three-quarter day boats running
to Mexico cashed in on this bite. Pacific Voyager out of Seaforth Sportfishing was out Jan. 3 with 13 anglers and landed six yellowtail, 65 white- fish, two sand bass, two rockfish, two bonito and one sheephead at the Coronados.

Western Pride out of Davey’s Locker was out on Jan. 3 with 65 anglers on the three-quarter day trip and landed 259 sculpin, 117 sand dabs and three perch. Over the week- end Gentleman out of Channel Islands Sportfishing ran three-quarter day trips both days. On Jan. 2 25 anglers had limits of 125 bonito and 1,200 sand dabs; on Jan. 3 the 15 anglers had 75 bonito (again limits), and 350 sand dabs.
LOBSTER UPDATE: Prior to this week’s weather
the lobster fishing has been very good with a lot of private boaters reporting limits, especial- ly at the local islands. Even the sportboats have been doing good.
At LA Waterfront
Sportfishing Triton reported lobster limits on Jan. 2 at Catalina Island and Gail Force returned the same day with 14 bugs from inside the har- bor.
