News Keeping your

home secure KENT Police is urging people to consider theirhomesecurity all year long after the end of its annual bur- glary awareness campaign. Operation Castle ran for 10weeks,

to cover the months when there is usually an increase in the number of reported break-ins. The main aim of this year’s cam-

paignwas to promote the crime pre- vention techniques available, with hints and tips posted on the force’s social media sites using #kentagain- stburglary. Chief Inspector Stephen Barlow, of

Kent Police, said: “Even though Op- eration Castle has come to an end, our efforts to prevent burglaries never will andwe encourage people to think about how secure their homes are every day of the year. “Burglars do not have an off-sea-

son and do not care what time of the year it is or whether it is the morn- ing, afternoon or night. All they want to know is how easy it is to break into your home, and what can they steal if they do. “The response to Operation Castle

this year has been very positive and I hopepeople have found our advice useful. By ensuring our homes are secure, we can all play our part in helping to reduce the number of burglaries in Kent.”

Parents backing appeal for a sensory playroom

A MAIDSTONE couple whose daughter suffered catastrophic brain damage during an emergency Caearean section delivery are back- ing an appeal for a sensory room for youngsters in the area. One-year-old Edie Hugheswasdi- agnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy when she was just five days old. The news was a devastating blow for her 34-year-old parents Marianne and Daniel, who live in Oakwood Park, and their daughter Mattie, five. Marianne said: “Edie arrived on

her due date but she had stopped moving in the womb so I had an emergency C-section. She had a foetal maternal haemorrhage, where her blood supply travelled out of her body and back up the umbilical cord. She needed three blood trans- fusions, spent four days on a life support machine and suffered brain damage as a result of the blood loss. “We never imagined that some-

thing like this could happen to us.” Marianne and Daniel were origi-

nally told that Edie would be able to do little herself. However, when her

family and friends celebrated her birthday in December, smiling Edie was making incredible progress. Hermumsaid:“Wewere referred

to the children’s integrated therapy Team with Kent Community Health NHSFoundation Trust (KCFHT) at Coxheath soon after Edie’s diagno- sis and they worked out a therapy plan. Edie also has hydrotherapy sessions at Preston Hall. Thanks to the team, she’s made incredible progress.”

Children with disabilities in Maid-

stone currently have to travel to clin- ics outside the area for sensory therapy. The £28,000 Gift of Play ap- peal would fund a sensory room at the Heathside clinic in Coxheath. Marianne said: “We travel to Gillingham each month to use the sensory room at Woodlands School. It’s a wonderful space and you can tell that Edie benefits; it’s such a calming, immersive environment. “If we didn’t use it I know Edie wouldn’t be at the stage she is now.” The appeal is being co-ordinated

by i care, the charitable arm of KCHFT, which held a fund-raising quiz at Maidstone FC this month. To make a donation, search for

The Gift of Play on Just Giving.  Most NHS Trusts have a charita- ble arm that takes donations from the public to buy equipment or serv- ices such as community gardens and play equipment, which are not funded by the NHS. For more on KCHFT-funded proj-
