Bus boss says: use it or lose it

STARK warnings have been is- sued to passengers by two of Maidstone bus companies. “Use it or lose it” was the mes-

sage to Hollingbourne residents from bus operator Nu Venture this week from owner Norman Kemp in light of the drive for austerity cuts by the county council. Mr Kempwelcomed an opportu-

nity to talk to Hollingbourne Parish Council, saying he had no passion to withdraw the village’s Number 13 service but it was op- portune to mention the risk facing all subsidised services. The num- ber 13, between the village and Maidstone, is one of only 3% of bus routes funded by KCC. He said: “It is not that the bus

isn’t used elsewhere that it calls, in- cluding Leeds, Langley Heath, Otham and the Sutton Road, but in Hollingbourne there are often no passengers at all. This puts the service at risk in the eyes of the county council and I would urge villagers to make use of it.” The number 13 leaves Holling- bourne church at 7.17am, 9.50,

11.30 and again at 1.30pm, making request stops anywhere along Ey- horne Street. Meanwhile, Unite regional offi-

cer Dave Weeks said Arriva serv- ices in Maidstone are still at risk from strike action because of moves by bosses to introduce mys- tery shoppers on services. In spite of a vote for strike action,

talks have been continuing be- tween the union and bus service bosses. However, a solution still seems someway off. Mr Weeks said services would

not be affected over Christmas, but would face a further review in the new year, adding: “After talks under the auspices of the concilia- tion service Acas, we have agreed with the Arrivamanagement to ex- tend the 28-day period for taking action by a further 28 days and postponed any planned action until January 20 to allow the agreed changes to take effect.” A spokesman for Arriva said

talks at Acas had been “fruitful” and that he was confident a solu- tion would be found.
