The police can only take action if there is a serious risk of a breach of the peace or offences under the Public Order Act.
If a demonstration or protest is planned, there is a requirement on the organisers to liaise with police regarding the route and timings. The City of London Police will, therefore, always be best placed to advise on the impact this may have on your business, and its web site –
www.cityoflondon.police.uk – will contain up to date information about road closures, access restrictions and so on. However, it must be remembered that activists intent on operating illegally will avoid their legal duty to liaise with police and often provide misleading information.
Even if the risk of disorder is minimal, it is inevitable that protests of all kinds will disrupt business at some level, putting extra stress on the transport system, for example, or necessitating changes to
working patterns on the day in question. The City of London Police works closely with the Metropolitan Police and the British Transport Police to ensure a co-ordinated response to protest events in London and their aftermath.
The City of London Police depends on the support and co-operation of individuals and businesses to police the Square Mile effectively. If you become aware of something suspicious – hostile surveillance of your building by individuals, for example – in the run up to a planned protest or indeed at any other time, trust your instincts and report it to the police. What might seem insignificant on its own could actually provide a vital link in a wider investigation.
If your company has appointed a Domestic Extremism Co-Ordinator (DECO) to oversee its counter-extremism policies and procedures, he or she will be your point of contact with the City of London Police.
