“I was skinny with straggly hair and probably a bit tricky,” she says with a laugh in an upstairs restaurant at the Houses of Parliament. “There was a stubborn element to my character, being told not to answer back.


Mrs Whately’s father definitely instilled the “ethic of hard work” in the young Helen.


“I was quite good at


occupying myself and as I became older, being motivated.”
