It’s sew long from the ladies at haberdashery

AS the girls at Sew a Good Yarn in Maidstone cast off their final stitch …there’ll be no regrets. Joint owner Linda Gander said: “There have been some real chal- lenges along the way and certainly none of us will be retiring to Monte Carlo – or even the south coast – but we’ve enjoyed every minute.” She joined Liz Sawyers in 2011

with a five-year plan to ensure the town continued to have a haber- dashery store, following the closure of C&H Fabrics in Week Street, where they both worked. Unfortu- nately, three years after opening their new venture in The Mall, Liz died following a long illness. Linda said: “Liz had all the ideas

and drive when we set out with a five-year plan and thanks to Liz’s husband Hugh, we have fulfilled that.We felt that now, as our lease comes up, itwas a good time to re- tire. The girls in the shop have been brilliant.” Stock is now on sale at half price

boxes and stock up on wool and fabric. It will be sorry to close up shop for the last time,” said Linda. However, the 65-year-old, who

lives on the Tonbridge Road with husband Tony, says she is now looking forward to some time out. She plans to enjoy her knitting –

and crochet work – as a hobby, not a busman’s holiday – spending time with her granddaughters and

her 85-year-old mum. Linda said: “I might do some charity work, but not until next summer and I think Tony is look- ing forward to me standing down. “After five years working atC&H Fabrics and five years in business, I will now be able to cook his dinner for him, rather than the other way round, which is what happens most nights.”
