Shamballa Jewels – the global frontrunner of spiritual inspired fine jewellery – welcomes the winter season with a collection that celebrates their Nordic heritage, and reminds us to embrace the full spectrum of life. Shamballa Jewels Co-Founders, Mads & Mikkel Kornerup, tell us all about how to combine Scandinavian aesthetics with Eastern philosophy and ancient stories, and why minimalism and functionality continue to be vital to their design.
Where did the inspiration for the Nordic Magic collection come from? Mikkel: We are Scandinavian and our Nordic heritage is – and has always been – an important part of Shamballa Jewels. While we are spiritually inspired, captured by ancient stories and Eastern philosophy, the Scandinavian minimalism and functionality continue to be vital to our designs. Functional in the sense that we want our jewellery to have a purpose, and be more than just the materials used to create it. We wish for jewellery to encourage people to stop, breathe and find inner balance – that they will evoke and represent feelings, and be a reminder to be present and tap into one's inner world of values and memories. So that they are actively cherished for every day the pieces are worn.
Mads: Our Nordic roots – and especially the Nordic nature – complement these thoughts quite well. The Nordic lifestyle teaches us that we do not need much in life to be happy and grateful, and helps us find our own inner tranquillity. Walking around in the woods together with our families are oſt en the moments we cherish the most when everything is just casual and rooted in nature. That is when we remember to embrace life and be thankful for the people we celebrate it with. It has nothing to do with materialistic luxury but about the feelings that we associate it with.
We wanted to emphasise all of this through the Nordic Magic collection, and it was then natural for us to return to our Nordic hinterland and celebrate the raw, sublime power of the northern wilderness and its string of natural jewels. This nature became our muse; from the idyllic Danish forests to the sky-stretching mountains further north. For us, the idea of embracing life at its fullest could not be expressed better than by going back to our own roots, on several levels.
How else does your Nordic heritage complement the spiritual nature of Shamballa Jewels? Mads: Shamballa Jewels is based on a vision of encouraging people to find inner peace through compassion – towards each other and towards nature as well. We believe that everything is connected, and aspire to unite the two, and create a sense of belonging. Especially today where nature needs us more than ever. Shamballa Jewels is rooted in nature, as we use some of the finest materials that it has to off er; ebony, onyx, raw diamonds and precious gems in their organic form. We believe that the purity and authenticity of nature is transmitted into the Shamballa Jewels universe by using these materials.
Mikkel: Because we believe that we are all connected and at the same time are using some of nature’s most precious materials, we also think it is crucial that we always aspire towards creating jewellery with high longevity that can be passed down generations. We do so by blending ancient – timeless and universal – stories with modern design. We even take it one step further by also applying it into our packaging; our jewellery shrines are created from wood types chosen especially for their beauty and rarity, and are the perfect storage for true treasures. We want every step of the Shamballa journey to encourage others to be conscious; of themselves, their needs and their surroundings, and enjoy pieces that can live forever.
What do you hope to achieve through the Nordic Magic collection? Mikkel: With its inspiration being found in the Nordic nature with all that it entails, we hope that the Nordic Magic collection will evoke reminiscences of diff erent kinds, and be a reminder for people to embrace and praise the full spectrum of life – remember the small things that make the big diff erence. In line with the Shamballa Jewels vision and values, we also hope that the Nordic Magic collection and the Star of Shamballa – our recurring motif that shines throughout every creation in the Shamballa Universe – will inspire others to find inner peace and harmony – their Inner Shamballa – through love, compassion, joy and wisdom. To radiate their inner light during the winter season, and share smiles, gratitude and appreciation.
What makes it special to you? Mads: Shamballa Jewels has a long history of celebrating places of near and far, of stories both ancient and new, that trigger curiosity and inspire conversations. These are places and stories that are reflected in all of our jewellery – each one of them being unique, thus making every single creation within the Shamballa Jewels universe extremely special to the both of us. The Nordic Magic designs are as well, as they are created through a journey back to our Nordic hinterland – a journey full of memories and emotions, as well as respect and humility towards forces of nature.
What makes it luxurious? Mikkel: The Nordic Magic collection is a magnificent combination of humble stones complemented with rare and magical treasures. For the first time we have used white granite in our creations to symbolise the rough, yet pristine surroundings of the north, and combined it with rare grey and raw diamonds to ensure the feeling of magical, understated luxury. Precious stones – red rubies, blue and yellow sapphires – create the perfect backdrop to the soſt hues of white and grey ensuring perfectly balanced creations.
