mAking the most of Your pre-registrAtion trAining YeAr

A huge welcome to our lAtest bunch of pre-registrAtion phArmAcists. Your pre-registrAtion YeAr is the beginning of Your cAreer As A phArmAcist, And mAking the most of it will Allow for A smooth trAnsition from phArmAcY student to quAlified phArmAcist. below Are mY top tips for mAking the most of Your trAining YeAr by Jonathon clarke

get orgAnised

sometimes the most difficult aspect of the pre-registration training is finding that work-life-study balance. getting organised early is the best way to help you find that balance and it really should be at the top of your priority list.

so, how do you get organised? create a learning journey plan; and be aware of key portfolio submission dates, training days away, exam dates and deadlines for registration. i highly recommend becoming best friends with a diary or smartphone app!

make now (not march 2017) the time to begin to plan your learning journey for the year ahead. set weekly goals so you know what you would like to learn by and when. don’t forget to challenge yourself!

exAm prepArAtion one of the biggest hurdles of your pre-registration year will be passing your registration exam. to do this you will need to understand and apply your pharmaceutical knowledge.

the best way to grasp what is expected of you at your registration exam is to read your assessment framework. You can also gauge what the registration exam is like by accessing past papers.

i believe the earlier you can begin exam preparation the better. use your learning journey to identify what you would like to know by certain week stages throughout the year.

Ask questions

this is a ‘no-brainer’, but sometimes students can be afraid to ask 42 - SCOTTISH PHARMACIST

questions due to the fear that they may look 'stupid'.

remember you are there to learn! You are not expected to know everything, so seek further clarification on anything you don’t quite understand.

A simple notepAd reAllY does work

during my own pre-reg, if i came across a drug or process i didn’t understand, i simply wrote it down.

this allowed me to quickly identify areas that i needed to focus on. using a notebook for recording also allowed me to complete my performance standards easier.

mAke time for Yourself Your training year can be one of the busiest years of your life between work, study and training days. make time for yourself each day to relaxand do something you enjoy.

this could be something simple like going for a walk or reading a book. the benefit of this is it allows you to de-stress and sets you up for winning the next day.

keep up to dAte on phArmAcY news

use social media to your advantage and keep on top of the latest information alerts within pharmacy. this allows important news updatesto come straight to your inbox.

examples of this include: signing upto mhrA email alerts for drugwarnings, and adding your email toreceive communication from the local

health board. i would also encourage you to subscribe to a pharmacy magazine, as this can keep you updated on key issues going on in the pharmacy world!

leArn from All phArmAcY teAm members not Just the phArmAcist

Your pharmacy tutor can be viewed as your first career role model to emulate and learn from.

however, if you can, you should try to learn from other qualified pharmacists. i was lucky in that i had three pharmacists working alongside me and i learnt from all three of them.

i would also encourage you to learn from all members of the pharmacy team (ie, the

technicians/support staff) as doing so will allow you to quickly become a well-rounded pharmacist.

different phArmAcY, different services it’s easy during pre-reg to become accustomed to one pharmacy if you are only based in one place. however, emember that as a locum pharmacist you may be working in different pharmacies on a daily basis.

to gain experience outside your pharmacy, i suggest you swap with a friend for one day (if practical). this will allow you to reflect on the services that your pharmacy offers and gauge what other services you may need more experience in.

leArn Alongside Your peers university training supports peer learning and it is important to

continue this into your pre-reg training. easy ways to do this could be suggesting a catch-up with fellow pre-regs once a month, where you can support one another and learn from each other’s mistakes.

You can easily do this online on facebook and it's a good way to share material, test each other and alert each other on anything that is new and will help towards the exam.

enJoY it!

Your pre-registration training will be one of the quickest years of your life! i look back on my own pre-reg with fond memories. enjoy every minute! •
