A SEASON OF

“Miracles occur naturally as expressions of

love. The real miracle is the love that inspires them. In this sense, everything that comes from love is a miracle.” - A Course in Miracles Miracles are not necessarily about the shifting of

things on the outer plane, but rather are an inner- shift in perception. They change our paradigm from one of fear and separation, to love and oneness. Of course, it’s much easier to love when everything is going our way and people are doing just what we want them to do. The challenge, is to love in a world where fear, competition and attack dominates. It requires tremendous discipline to not judge according to appearances. When we judge based on appearances, we are mentally and emotionally unstable because the outer world is constantly changing. The pendulum just keeps swinging—one day our team is “win- ning” so we feel happy—the next day our team is “losing” and we’re devastated. This is the root cause of our suffering. The profound miracle is the realization that you don’t have to have things going your way in order to be happy and you can love yourself even when you think your “losing.” Winning and losing, are simply the ego concepts that keep us from experiencing the inner peace that is ever-present at our center. Miracles are not necessarily about the shifting of things on the outer plane, but rather are an inner-shift in perception.

“Love does not conquer all things, but it does

set all things right.” - A Course in Miracles Love does not conquer or win, because there is

no competition or war in love. Love simply abides. And, love is activated by the one who chooses to love, even in the face of lovelessness. This love is not about being a doormat and letting anyone walk

AND LIGHT

all over us, either. It is a powerful, fierce, spiritual force that feeds and nourishes the one who loves. We love for our own sake, not for the sake of the other. We love because it feeds our spirit and soothes our mind. It feels awful to live in fear, defensiveness and anger, no matter how seemingly justified. To me, the spiritual significance of this time of

year is about light coming into a darkened place, whether it is the Festival of Lights Hanukkah miracle of the oil burning in the temple for eight nights, the winter solstice beginning the lengthen- ing of daylight, the story of Christ being born as the light of the world, or any of the other mystical stories about this time of the year. These stories symbolize the potential light within each of us, which we can choose to ignite and fan in times of darkness, whether personal or global. These stories speak to our soul and our psyche to remind us that within us lies the possibility of the miracle of illumination no matter how dark the night. There is no night that has not ended in daylight, no winter that has not ultimately turned to spring and then summer. But ,we must choose to fan that flame, rather than to give in to fear and darkness. Our enemy is not a person or a group, it is fear itself. As you travel around your world and your neighborhood at this time of year, you may want to think of this as you see all the lights that people put up everywhere in celebration of the season. You can think, “Those lights are me. They’re all of us and they are here as beautiful reminders of the potential for miracles in us all. Think I’ll shine extra bright today.” Jacob Glass is an author and teacher who lectures regularly at San Diego Vision CSL (on Saturday, December 10), at Inspire in West Hollywood and at Unity of Santa Barbara.
