Students were bringing in their own lawn chairs. While that’s an exciting problem to have, it can be solved with additional faculty to increase course capacity. With those additional courses, every student should have a seat in class, but it also provides flexibility in course offerings. As an example, Voss will now be able to teach a safety and motor carrier policy class. In addition to faculty salaries, scholarships will be made available, modest at first, but expanding over time. The majority of grants awarded do
not permanently endow a position. “By structuring this grant as an endow- ment, it does lend permanence to the program. That’s something I’m really proud of is that this program hope- fully will be here long after I’m gone.” In addition to Voss, Doug Isanhart and Scott Nadler are part of the logistics and supply chain team that, as luck would have it, fit together perfectly, though they were each brought in at different times to fill different roles.
“I THINK THAT TO START A PROGRAM, ESPECIALLY, THAT IT TAKES A LOT OF ENTREPRENEURIAL
SPIRIT AND YOU HAVE TO BE VISIBLE AND YOU HAVE TO BE LIKABLE.”
“We’ve been able to piece together a supply chain team, a logistics team, from kind of random parts.” When asked how the new program
differs from the University of Arkansas’, Voss indicated that while Fayetteville does have courses related to transpor- tation and trucking, UCA’s program is perhaps a bit more focused on that area. Additionally, due to the problems trucking companies face in managing and retaining drivers, they also chose to emphasize courses in personnel man- agement. Because there are two sides to
the coin of safety—the safety of the traveling public and the safety of the drivers—expert management is key. “I mean, you can’t be giving instructions that are going to put them [drivers] in a bad situation, for instance. If the job is safer, if the managers are more well- trained, hopefully that helps to improve turnover.” “I don’t think that transportation
has historically been the field of first choice for a lot of people. So I think as we start to make it the field of first choice for those that manage truck
