gardens like the one at Dalnavert. So present were flowers in the lives of Victo- rian people that
they even acknowl-
edged an extensive language of flow- ers that allowed people to send covert messages to sweethearts, friends, and family by simply presenting a bouquet of flowers to them. Young women, like Daisy Macdonald, would have been adept in floriography and could share their thoughts and feelings with others with a simple nosegay of flowers. “Friendship” would be represented
with a collection of forget-me-nots, while “distrust” could be communicat- ed with a sprig of lavender. Marigolds — particularly in yellow — could often be associated with pain and grief, while the gladiolus could indicate the owner’s
