Manhatan Chamber has 1,400 members and

takes pride in its extensive network and business influence. Walker says one of the strengths is the variety of small, medium-size and larger business. “It’s a very good mix and we see ourselves as the hub and a super-connector bringing businesses of all sizes together. We can work on projects together but also connect for actual business deals.” She says the buzz in Manhatan is incredible. “In

2017, there will be elections for the new Mayor of New York City. Of course the presidential elections are highly important, but also front and centre for us are the elections for Mayor next year. “We have become the start-up city. Tis is

amazing. Our mayors have gone out of their way in trying to recruit certain growth businesses, especially in the tech sector. Tey have been very successful and we want to see this continuing. Our job at the Chamber is to be helpful.’’ Manhatan Chamber of Commerce represents

businesses in one of the five boroughs of New York City, with Chambers in the other four boroughs.

Manhatan collaborates with its partners on city-wide issues. “Tere’s a lot happening in the other boroughs with growth, and this is great. But I always say: ‘Manhatan is the centre of the Universe.’ Walker understands that some

stereotypes exists about New York City and the Wall Street culture which have been highlighted by the media and the movies. “Many things are true. New York is a great place to be because we have the top talent in the world – and they want to be here, which is great for companies. But there is also a very difficult environment, it is very competitive, it can be expensive and it can be difficult to navigate in terms of regulations and licences.’’

Walker says that Manhatan Chamber can help

people figure out how to work through all of this. “Tat’s the role that I want to play. We want to make sure that people who have a good idea – or want to start a business – are able to get a leg-up when they are doing this.’’ Jessica Walker can’t wait

to come to Glasgow, and is working on a date in 2017. “I really want to get a taste of

Glasgow and I look forward to coming across and meeting businesses who seriously want to do business with us in Manhatan.’’ Glasgow Chamber

is taking ten member companies to New York in November for a series of business to business and networking events.
