Region’s top women shine at 2016 business awards
Winners of Women in Business 2016 were announced and celebrated last month at the fourth annual awards ceremony
Over 200 business people gathered at Oakley Hall to recognise high-achieving, successful women across the south – women who have made their mark in business in the past year, along with those organisations and the people in them who are championing change.
David Murray, publisher of The Business Magazine and host of the awards, thanked the sponsors: Barclays, Blake Morgan, Clarify, Taylor Made Computer Solutions and Windsor Vehicle Leasing, and complimented the judges on a “great job, scrutinising the nominations and interviewing the candidates”.
Of the entries he said: “This year, not only were there more nominations but the quality was exemplary; and it’s fair to say that this awards scheme is always very competitive.”
Tamsin Napier-Munn, presenter and campaigns manager at The Business Magazine, said: “‘Faith is taking the first step, even when you can’t see the whole staircase’. Being inspired can help us do that … take the next step. So we are here to celebrate all those who have been nominated, and to be inspired by all our winners.”
Guest speaker Michelle Mone, The Baroness Mone of Mayfair OBE, opened her inspirational talk with the comment that she hasn’t made it yet. She added: “When you love something so much, you don’t know that you’re working.”
When the winners, role models and finalists had been presented with their awards, Jagdeep Rai of Barclays had the final few words. She said: “Once again, these awards have surpassed themselves in terms of the energy, the inspirational stories, and the quality of all of the wonderful nominations that we’ve seen.
Michelle Mone’s chosen charity for the evening was Medical Detection Dogs, which uses dogs to detect human diseases, and a collection from the tables raised £1,725.
“Women are becoming a lot more influential, and a lot better at putting themselves forward. We’ve got to continue to be courageous, to put ourselves forward, leverage our talent, and certainly look at being a women in business as a real edge, instead of the thing that historically might have held us back.
“I firmly believe that we, as women, are holding the baton for future generations, and it is our responsibility to make sure this is passed on. I would encourage everybody to leave here tonight and think about who you’re going to encourage and inspire to be like yourself, because we are all role models to somebody.”
