Interserve, the international support services and construction group based at Twyford, was the top performer among the bigger companies in the region’s share price league for August.

The group reported robust, in-line revenue (£1,632 million, up 2.4%) and earnings performance for the first half-year, with strong gross operating cashflow and reduced net debt. New business in the period totalled £1.9 billion and there were several major contract wins, including the Home Office and the BBC.

Star rise of the month was by smaller group Sopheon (UK headquarters near Lightwater)

which aims to improve clients’ innovation management and new product development performance.

Announcing interim accounts showing some 37% rise in revenues to $11.5m, chairman Barry Mence said: “The momentum shift we first noted in our interim report a year ago has delivered a strong performance in 2015, as well as a strong first half for 2016. This shift has been made possible by the strategic and operational changes we initiated two and a half years ago in reaction to market conditions that we could see were beginning to evolve, as increasingly now evidenced by third-party validation from industry analysts.”

Last year’s HWYE competition finalists with Nick Coleman (left) and Julianne Ponan (third right)

This year alone, 2013 HWYE finalist Carina Evans and Dog Rocks received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade; 2011 finalist Peter Higgs of PGH was invited to a Prince’s Trust event with the royal family to showcase his business; 2015 finalist Julianne Ponan won ‘Director of the Year’ at the Toast of Surrey Business Awards – and last year’s joint winner Nick Coleman won his pitch for a deal on BBC’s Dragon’s Den. And that’s just some examples.

Jane Gregory at Haines Watts, said, “The Thames Valley has

some incredibly talented young entrepreneurs from a wide range of business sectors and we’re delighted that they step forward to enter competitions like ours, where their excellence can be recognised and rewarded. We hope this will be an inspiration to all the other hard-working individuals out there and that they might also enter awards as part of their successful business journey.”

The many talented applicants who don’t make it through to this year’s HWYE finals might be interested in applying for the 2017 competition when it opens next spring.
