The experts are not always right of course. Look at such products as Tangle Teezers and Trunkie; despite not getting funding from the Dragons, they have gone from strength to strength. And of course there is Steve Jobs who once famously said: “People don’t know what they want until I show them”. Examples like these are exceptions, rather than the rule – so how do you ensure your product’s success? I am blessed to work alongside some amazing entrepreneurs

including Ben Towers, the 17-year-old tech genius as seen on TV’s Pocket Money Pitch, and the topic of Richard Branson’s recent blog and Wiltshire’s most successful young Entrepreneur, Jordan Daykin, CEO of Gripit Fixings. Jordan created the Gripit at age 13, and now at 20 years old, the company was recently valued at over £14 million and crowd funded £2 million in five days. So, what is the secret of Ben and Jordan’s success? What makes them

in the 10% rather than the 90%? In my opinion, there are several contributing factors: 1. A great product, which was well-researched 2. A strong business plan 3. A complete understanding of cost and profits 4. Hard work and commitment 5. Early adopters to change

But the most important factor is that every step of the journey both businesses have taken specialist advice in areas that were unfamiliar to them. They also grasped very early on that sales was key to everything, because if you don’t sell, you don’t have a business – just a good idea. November 2015 saw the close of the Government’s

Business Growth service and the removal of match funding schemes like Growth Vouchers and Growth Accelerator, which helped businesses like Ben and Jordan’s take specialist advice. Without this financial lifeline for sales advice it can be make or break, for start-ups, micro and fledging entrepreneurs. Being an entrepreneur is about finding a

niche in areas where your product or service is in demand, since there is a lack of support in this area. This lead to me creating my new

brand Alison Edgar – The Entrepreneur’s Godmother, working with groups of business owners to teach them Easy Peasy Sales, giving my top techniques which allows the small business to survive and grow.
